IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, FATHER DIDN'T KNOW BEST

If you've ever wondered how much football consumed Joe Gibbs, to the exclusion of all else in his life, consider this story from the former Washington Redskins' coach:

"The first year I went to camp and took [youngest son] Coy, he was about eight.

"My wife, Pat, told me he was too young to go, but I told her I'd watch him all the time. His brother [J.D.] was going and the [Bobby] Beathard boys were about 14 or 15.

"I drop the guys off - put them in their room downstairs. And I promise you, for three days I never even thought of him. I was in meetings late at night.

"Three days later, I came walking down to the chow hall, and I see this body fly off the stairs and come down on the concrete. It slides out in front of me and I said, `My gosh, that's Coy.'

"The older guys had thrown him off the stairs. He turned around and fired an ice cream cone and stuck it on the window by 'em. I said, `Coy!' He looked at me and his eyes were two inches back in his head. He hadn't slept in three days. He had chocolate on his face. There's no telling what he had been eating.

"I grabbed him and said, `Do not tell your mother anything about this.' I told him to go take a shower and get to bed. The kid slept 20 hours straight.

"And I never told his mother about that until it was too late to do anything."
