TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Janet Sebolt pays her pupils to perform. But it's not dollars and cents they receive, it's "hurricane bucks," part of an incentive program she and other sixth-grade teachers at Andrew Lewis in Salem use to reward their pupils.

The "hurricane bucks" are paid at the end of the week, and pupils can "buy" pizza or ice cream parties when they collect a certain amount. "It gives them something to work for," said Sebolt.

Sebolt, who teaches English and reading, says she enjoys sixth-graders because of their lack of inhibition and their "sense of innocence." "They're still children, and the peer pressure is not that strong yet."

"At Andrew Lewis, sixth-graders are new. Mrs. Sebolt helps everyone feel welcome. She will make a subject that most students hate a subject they will love, " said the pupil who nominated Sebolt.

Sebolt and her husband, who also is a teacher, are the parents of 3-year-old Brad. Sebolt enjoys yard work and being outside.

If you have a nomination for Teacher of the Week, send the name of the nominee, his or her school and why you think that teacher should be honored. Include your name, telephone number and school and send to NewsFun, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010-2491.
