ALFANO TOP METRO COACH
Did Carol Alfano ever wonder whether she would be the Metro Conference women's basketball coach of the year this season?"Sure, you think about it," she said.
Tuesday, she received the award chosen by a panel of league coaches, sports information directors and media representatives. The Hokies (19-7) won nine more games than last year and finished second in the Metro for the first time.
"You never know," Alfano said from the hotel where Tech is staying while in Louisville for the Metro tournament. "There are a lot of good people in this league. A lot of good people could've gotten the vote. I feel very, very fortunate."
The Hokies also had two players voted to the All-Metro second team: forward Christi Osborne and center Jenny Root, both sophomores.
In Alfano's 15th year at Tech, the Hokies were ranked seventh nationally in 3-point field-goal percentage (.398) and led the Metro in points per game (76.1) and field-goal percentage (.482). It's the first time the Metro has honored Alfano.
Southern Mississippi's Janice Felder, who averaged 20.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, was chosen the Metro's player of the year for the second straight season.
Other first-team choices: Charlita Davis of UNC Charlotte, Nell Knox of Louisville, Keisha Johnson of Tulane and Tanya Bullock of Southern Mississippi.
The Metro's freshman of the year was South Florida's Tammy Van Oppen, who averaged 15.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game.
