HOKIES RALLY BY CHARLESTON

Two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning carried Virginia Tech to a 5-3 college baseball victory over the College of Charleston on Tuesday at Remley's Point Field in Charleston, S.C.

For the third time in their five games, the undefeated Hokies won in their last at-bat.

Tech took the lead for good on sophomore center fielder Popeye Smith's solo home run to right field off Charleston reliever Mike Moore. Senior left fielder Mike Reedy followed with a double to left center and scored when second baseman Justin Dobson singled up the middle.

Right-hander Jamie Patteson earned the victory with 1 scoreless innings. Sophomore starter Ron Preston pitched 7 innings.

Third baseman Bo Durkac had three of the Hokies' 10 hits. Right fielder J.R. Hawkins' two-run homer gave Tech a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

In other college baseball:

At Bridgewater, the Eagles' Bill Harlow went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in and Bridgewater defeated Washington and Lee 8-3 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Catcher Greg Rose went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Bridgewater (6-2 overall, 1-0 ODAC), which scored six runs in the fifth inning on four singles, a walk and a hit batsman.

W&L was led by Geren Steiner, who had three singles in four at-bats, and Matt Armigiotti, who hit a two-run homer in the eighth. W&L (0-2, 0-1) scored its runs in the eighth. The Generals play a double header at Randolph-Macon on Saturday.

At Lexington, VMI capitalized off weak pitching as the Keydets defeated Juniata College 9-1. Four VMI batters were hit by pitches. Juniata pitchers threw three wild pitches and Juniata catchers were charged with four passed balls. Of the nine Keydets runs, four were unearned and five were partially scored on pitching or catching errors.

Brian Adams led VMI (7-5) with a triple and two runs. Louie Napoleon scored one run and batted in one run. Adams and Napoleon each had a stolen base.

Chris Tulo, Billy Goodrich and Ryan Griffin combined to give up seven hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Juniata is 0-2.

At Johnson City, Tenn., outfielder Jody Krupinski slammed a three-run homer with one out in the ninth inning to give host East Tennessee State a 13-12 victory over Radford.

The Buccaneers (6-6) trailed 10-0 after three innings. Rod Walker led East Tennessee's comeback with a two home runs and one run batted in. Greg Phillips also hit a home run.

Duane Filchner helped Radford score six runs in the second inning when he hit a grand slam. Filchner had four hits in five times at bat and drove in six runs.
