GOLF HOKIES FINISH 5TH IN FLORIDA TOURNAMENT

Virginia Tech finished fifth in a 17-team field Tuesday after a windy third round in the Budget/University of Central Florida Golf Classic at Orlando, Fla.

The tournament, consisting of 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday's final 18, was played on the par-72, 7,167-yard Eastwood Golf Club.

North Carolina shot a 302 Tuesday and caught second-round leader Minnesota (308), and the two schools finished as co-champions at 896. Florida International was third at 897, followed by Alabama-Birmingham (899) and Tech (900), which finished with a 303 Tuesday.

Steven Driggers of Alabama-Birmingham shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 and won with a three-round total of 211, which tied the tournament record. Dray Summers of Stetson was second, six shots back, and Tech's Brian Sharp (73-218) tied for third with second-round leader Tim Cantwell of Mississippi.

Other Hokies scorers were Sean Farrell and Clayton Friend, who tied for 17th at 225. Tom Graziano shot a final round of 77.

At Staunton, Randolph-Macon's 322 team score won the Bridgewater ODAC Round-Robin at the par-72 Ingleside Golf Course. Washington and Lee was second at 343, followed by Bridgewater (345), Lynchburg (349) and Virginia Wesleyan (366).

L.J. Dalmata of Bridgewater was the medalist with a 77. Glenn Prillaman shot a 79 for second place for Roanoke College, which is on spring break and did not enter the team competition. Washington and Lee's Gam Mattingly shot an 81.
