6-YEAR TERM GIVEN IN MONTGOMERY WOUNDING

A Blacksburg man was sentenced Monday to serve six years in prison for the malicious wounding of another Montgomery County man last May.

Johnny William Bowman III, 35, of Pandapas Pond Road had previously pleaded guilty to the charge and to using a firearm to commit a felony.

He was charged by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office with maliciously shooting Gary Ray Barker, 28, in the left leg on May 12. The sheriff's office said at the time that Bowman and Barker gave conflicting stories about the shooting.

Barker said they were arguing in a pickup parked on Teaberry Lane in Christiansburg, and Bowman shot him as he got out of the vehicle. Bowman said he didn't have a gun, and no gun was found at the scene, police said.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Devore sentenced Bowman to 10 years in prison for the wounding, then suspended six years. Bowman also received a two-year sentence on the firearms charge. After serving six years, Bowman will be put on probation for six years.
