NBA NOTES

Don Barksdale, the first black player selected to an NBA All-Star team, died of cancer Monday. He was 69.

The UCLA graduate joined the Baltimore Bullets in 1951, becoming the third black player to sign a contract with the NBA. The others were Chuck Cooper who joined Boston in 1950, the same year Earl Lloyd signed with Washington.

Barksdale played two years at Baltimore and two at Boston during a career in which he averaged 11 points in 262 games.

As well has playing in the 1953 All-Star Game, Barksdale was a U.S. Olympic basketball player and won a gold medal at London in 1948.
