NEW FLA. LAW ENDORSES PUBLIC BREAST-FEEDING

It's finally official. Breast-feeding a baby is OK in Florida. Any time. Any place.

The governor's signature Tuesday ensures a mother's right to breast-feed her baby without fear of violating laws against nudity.

"We've recognized that breast-feeding is not an illicit practice that must be hidden," said Gov. Lawton Chiles. "It's not a shameful thing that must be done behind closed doors."

The law offers more than protection against harassment of nursing mothers, advocates say. It calls attention to the value of breast-feeding - not only a nurturing act, but also an exceptionally nutritional way of rearing a child.

"It will remove at least one stumbling block in women's decisions to breast-feed. It creates a statement by society that breast-feeding is valuable," said Liz Baldwin of Miami, a member of the pro-nursing La Leche League.
