EX-UVA PLAYER REQUESTS LAWYER FOR MURDER CHARGE

A man charged in the shooting death of a teacher and the wounding of another woman asked for a court-appointed attorney Tuesday at his arraignment.

General District Judge Joan T. Morris agreed to the request by Darryl Quentin Smith, 32. The former University of Virginia football player was arrested Monday about six hours after the separate shootings outside a convenience store and in a middle school parking lot.

The judge set April 26 for a preliminary hearing for Smith, who is being held without bond. He faces charges of murder, maiming and illegal use of a firearm.

Police had no indication of a motive for either shooting other than the theft of a car being driven by one of the victims.

Lynn James, a police department spokeswoman, said a receipt found where Smith lived indicated the gun used in the shootings had been purchased just last week in Newport News. She did not know where the gun was bought.

According to police, Smith approached Stephanie Hawkins as she drove up to a convenience store about 7:30 a.m. and shot her five times. He then drove off in her car to the nearby Dozier Middle School parking lot and allegedly shot seventh-grade science teacher Donna L. Harrison at least four times.

Harrison, 45, died at the scene. Hawkins, 51, underwent surgery and was reported in serious but stable condition Tuesday.
