SPEEDING TICKET LEADS POLICE TO BOOTLEG HAUL
State police who stopped a motorist for speeding Tuesday seized 450 gallons of bootleg liquor worth about $13,500.Ricky Dale Law, 34, of Franklin County was charged with possession and transportation of illegal alcohol, Trooper Stirling Ross said.
Ross said Law was stopped on U.S. 460 and cited with driving 69 mph in a 55-mph zone. He was driving a van registered to his uncle, Everett Law, also of Franklin County.
Ross said he noticed a strong odor of alcohol as he talked to Law, and a tarpaulin covered something in the back. When Law consented to a search, Ross found gallon-sized plastic jugs filled with the liquor.
The van was confiscated and Law was being held Tuesday in Dinwiddie County jail in lieu of $1,000 bond.
Dinwiddie Sheriff Bennie M. Heath Sr. said the liquor was "the largest batch we've had confiscated in the county in the past 15 years."
