OBIT BURGESS, ZELDA WILLIAMS

BURGESS, Zelda Williams, 89, of Bassett, died Monday, March 8, 1993 at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville. Mrs. Burgess resided with her niece, Peggy Oakley of Reed Creek Drive, Bassett. Prior to declining health she lived at 213 Broad Street, Martinsville. Born in the Providence Church community in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late James J. Williams and Bettie Pearson Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl B. Burgess in 1975. She was retired from J.C. Penney Co. with 36 years service, was a 1922 graduate of Bassett High School, was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church, Martinsville where she was a member of Olivia Keesee Sunday School Class, was a member of Fort Trail Daughters of the American Revolution, was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and was a member of Eastern Star Chapter #66. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Clara Turner, Martinsville; a brother, James Palmer Williams, Collinsville; 12 nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel with Dr. Chevis Horne officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. The family will receive friends Wednesday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel, Bassett.
