MENTAL ILLNESS STILL MISUNDERSTOOD
THE MARCH 1993 Update, written by Community and Roanoke Memorial hospitals, published a picture of a woman with her face covered to hide her identity. I knew before I read the first sentence that this article would be about depression.Apparently we still live in a society in which mental illness is vastly misunderstood. In past Update publications, when heart disease, diabetes or cancer were discussed, persons suffering with each of these physical ailments faced the camera and offered their identities. I look forward to the time when persons who are struggling with mental illnesses will feel safe enough in our society to also face the camera and reveal their identities. LORI B. MICK BLACKSBURG
