USAIR TO PUT MORE VIDEO SCREENS IN JETS
Passenger response to the interactive video screens USAir has experimented with on some jets has been so strong that the airline has decided to install them on most of its fleet.Installation of advanced versions of the FlightLink system, developed by In-Flight Phone Corp. of Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., will begin in June. Each seat on as many as 402 of USAir's 446 jets will be equipped by the end of 1994.
USAir will be the first commercial customer for the system, which also has been tested by American Airlines.
The FlightLink system lets passengers make phone calls, play video games, get stock quotes, connect with office computers and send short fax messages without leaving their seats. It consists of a video screen built into the back of the seat in front of the passenger, plus a handset/keyboard that tucks under the armrest.
Passengers pay for the services by credit card. Phone service now is $2 per minute. Stock quotes cost 75 cents each. Sending a short fax costs $1.50. There's a flat fee of $3 to play video games.
