TECH WOMEN WIN IN METRO

Christi Osborne had 23 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday night to lead Virginia Tech to a 74-50 victory over South Florida in the first round of the Metro Conference women's basketball tournament.

The Hokies won their 20th game for the first time in the 17 years of the women's basketball program.

Jenny Root added 18 points and 11 rebounds as the second-seeded Hokies turned back a determined South Florida comeback.

Tech (20-7) led 46-34 with 16 minutes left to play when South Florida went on a 12-2 run to cut its deficit to 48-46. Tech then used a basket by Osborne and a three-point play by Sue Logsdon to regain control.

South Florida scored to make it 53-48 with 9:55 left, but didn't score again until only 32 seconds remained.

Lisa Griffith had 11 points for Virginia Tech, running her career total to 1,020 points.

The Hokies play today at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Louisville-Virginia Commonwealth.
