HAMLAR ENDOWS FUND FOR MINORITY STUDENTS
An endowment fund aimed at recruiting minority students to Virginia Western Community College has been established with a $5,000 gift from Lawrence H. Hamlar.Hamlar, president and co-founder of Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, established the fund in honor of his late wife, Constance Johnson Hamlar, who taught English at the college for 11 years. The fund is entitled "Bridging the Gap."
Hamlar was a member of the the Virginia Western local board from 1983-1991, serving as president the last two years. He also has served on the board of directors of the Virginia Council of Small Business Administration, Roanoke College, the Roanoke Science Museum, Roanoke Ballet and the Hunton YMCA.
"I don't think enough minorities take advantage of the college and through the endowment, I hope to encourage more to do so," Hamlar said.
