TECH STREAK IN BASEBALL ENDS AT 5
Right-hander Jeff Tuohy pitched a complete game two-hitter Wednesday as Charleston Southern shut out Virginia Tech 3-0 for its sixth straight baseball win at Charleston, S.C.Charleston Southern (7-3) scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning and added a run in the sixth on a Troy Bresee homer.
Freshman pitcher Scott Crim pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, one earned run and no walks as the Hokies (5-1) lost for the first time this season. Denny Hedspeth's second-inning double and Bo Durkac's sixth-inning single were Tech's only hits.
The Hokies play at South Carolina today and Friday.
In other baseball:
First baseman Gerald Smith was 3-for-3 with four RBI as Ferrum defeated High Point 16-1 at High Point, N.C.
Matt Smith slugged a two-run homer and Chad France collected three hits for the Panthers.
Right-hander Keith Mayhew (2-0) pitched a one-hitter, striking out four and walking four.
At Radford, junior right-hander John Hynson tossed a six-hitter as Radford split a doubleheader with West Virginia.
The Highlanders won the first game 7-2 and lost the nightcap 11-0.
Hynson (2-0) yielded hits to the first two WVU batters, but didn't allow another one until the fifth inning. The Highlanders took a 5-0 lead on the strength of John Gegg's two-run triple. Donnie Fields had three hits for Radford.
In the second game, the Highlanders (5-2) were limited to three hits and the Mountaineers led 7-0 after three innings.
