PARTY LACKS SURPRISES AS CAUCUSES APPROACH

Democrats across the state will begin the long process this weekend of choosing their candidates for the state's top positions. The outcomes, however, already seem assured.

Party caucuses will be staged on Saturday in some localities and on Monday in others to elect delegates to the state Democratic convention in Richmond May 7-8.

Former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry is expected to handily win the more than 1,700 delegates needed to sew up the nomination for governor. She is being challenged by Nancy Spannaus, a supporter of Lyndon Larouche.

Lt. Gov. Don Beyer is unopposed for the nomination for lieutenant governor.

And Arlington lawyer Bill Dolan already claims to have secured enough unopposed delegates to guarantee his nomination for attorney general. His opponent, Bedford prosecutor James Updike, has not conceded, however.

While every delegate is supposed to be chosen by Monday night, there will be a few stragglers. Democrats in Poquoson, where local party leaders failed to schedule a caucus, will not meet until sometime later in March or April.

John McGlennon, 1st District chairman, said Wednesday he learned about the problem last week from the Spannaus campaign. Someone from Poquoson wanted to pre-file for Spannaus, but could not find information about a mass meeting in the city.

McGlennon said the 1st District Committee, meeting on March 20, will set up a mass meeting for Poquoson.

"Poquoson has not been an area of tremendous [Democratic] strength in the past," McGlennon said. "They have had difficulty in putting together and keeping together a committee. If anyone feels they would have been left out, they now have a second chance."
