5 APPLY FOR ROANOKE BOARD SEATS

Five people have applied for two seats on the Roanoke School Board that are now held by Chairman Finn Pincus and Charles Day.

Pincus and Day are among the applicants for the posts with new terms beginning July 1.

The other applicants are Paul Corn, a retired educator; Patricia Witten, a former president of the Roanoke Central PTA Council; and Joel Kelly, a former computer operator for the Treasury Department.

Wednesday was the deadline for applications.

City Council, which makes the appointments, will interview the applicants on April 29.

Pincus, who was appointed to the board three years ago, has been chairman since 1991. Day was also named to the board three years ago and has been vice chairman for two years.

The applicants provided biographical information in their applications:

Pincus is cross-country and track coach at Roanoke College. He is a former director of the ECPI Computer Institute. Pincus, 37, has a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and two master's degrees from Virginia Tech.

Day is a retired teacher, guidance counselor, principal and coach for city schools. Day, 59, received a bachelor's degree from Virginia State University and a master's degree from Radford.

Witten is a volunteer worker for city schools and a PTA leader. Witten, 45, is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in nursing. She was a member of the city's Community Relations Task Force.

Corn is a retired educator and consultant who has been a public school administrator, teacher and principal and college professor. Corn, 61, received a bachelor's degree from Oakland City College. He has master and doctoral degrees from Indiana University.

Kelly is a member of the Mayor's Committee for the Disabled and active in several community agencies. Kelly, 39, did not list college degrees or his current employment.
