THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM, an ecumenical project of several Roanoke Valley churches to offer specific services to children and youth, has scheduled monthly training seminars for volunteers through June 7.

Debbie Mooty, coordinator of the project, said the meetings are especially to recruit workers but are open to others seeking training with church-sponsored ministries.

On April 14, "Professional Attitudes and the Volunteer" will be the theme from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Mountain at Third Southwest. The May 3 meeting, "Working with the Angry Child," will begin at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem. Registration for this session is needed; call 342-3501.

On June 7 at Trinity Church at 7:30, "An Overview of Child Development" is planned at 7:30 p.m.

\ VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION will send four teams this spring and summer to Hayesville, N.C., to build a home for a large family. The program sponsored by United Methodists, is open to others with an interest in exercising ministry through construction skills.

Teams will work in the rural Carolina community May 2-8, May 9-15, June 27 to July 3 and July 25-31.

Participants will pay $125 but some churches are raising part of the funds. Call 989-3335 for more information.

\ AWAKENING, an annual series of Lenten renewal services sponsored by Roanoke area Churches of the Brethren, will feature the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gibble of Arlington as the preacher this year.

The series will be March 28-31 at Central Church, 416 Church Ave. in downtown Roanoke.

"Brethren as People of the Book" will be the theme of the 7:15 p.m. services. Combined choirs will sing each night, and youth also will participate. Child care will be available.

Gibble was minister of education at Central Church before entering seminary about 30 years ago. He and his wife, Ann, have been co-pastors of the Arlington church since 1985.

\ THE MESSIAH COLLEGE CHOIR of Grantham, Pa., will present a Lenten concert Monday at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, South Jefferson at 24th Street.

Selections from "Requiem" by Faure will be on the program along with anthems that thank and worship God.

The choir is directed by Larry Landis. Members are auditioned from the student body of 2,200.

An offering will be taken.

\ CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, Grandin at Brandon Southwest, is presenting choral groups for its Wednesday night Lenten programs this year. Next week's choir is Men of Distinction, an octet from Patrick Henry High School directed by Fletcher Nichols.

On March 24 the 46-voice Carthage College Choir of Kenosha, Wis., will sing. The series will close with the Collegium Choir of Roanoke College on March 31. All programs begin at 6:30 p.m. with a soup meal, and the concerts start an hour later. They are free.

\ GARY FULSEBAKKE of Roanoke has been named interim music director at Virginia Heights Baptist Church, succeeding Joseph Kennedy who has taken another position in Roanoke.

Sibyl Stump will serve as interim organist.

\ THE JOYFUL SOUNDS, a senior adult choral group from Waverly Place Baptist Church, will perform on March 21 at 7 p.m. at Garden City Baptist Church, 3536 Garden City Blvd. S.E. Patti Trail is the director.

\ GRACE CHURCH, an evangelical Protestant congregation at 2731 Edgewood St. S.W., has scheduled its spring Bible conference March 19-21.

The Rev. Dr. Bruce W. Dunn of Peoria, Ill, is the keynote speaker. The radio and conference speaker is pastor emeritus of Grace Presbyterian Church, where he served for 40 years.

His weekly radio program, Grace Worship Hour, was begun 42 years ago and is still heard in the Roanoke area on WHPE-FM and on WRIS-AM.

Friday and Saturday night services at Grace Church will begin at 7 with those on Sunday at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nursery is available.

\ LENTEN MUSIC at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, 402 Second St. in downtown Roanoke, will include selections from "Messiah" by Handel each Sunday at 11 a.m. The sermon will be coordinated with the composer's texts from Isaiah.

On March 28 at 4 p.m., "Messa di Gloria" by Puccini will be sung by the Chancel Choir accompanied by orchestra. Richard Cummins is conductor.

\ ROSEMARIE DILLON, a member of First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke, has been employed as director of the Weekday Preschool Ministries division of the church. She has taught for more than six years in the Child Development Center and has been interim director of the preschool program for the past eight months.
