RELIGION BRIEFS

A NEW PIPE ORGAN to replace an instrument played for more than 60 years, is expected to be in use at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem by Easter 1994. The vestry of the parish has approved its construction and installation by a Massachusetts builder.

Installation of the new organ, for which some funds already had been raised, is made possible by an anonymous gift.

\ FIRST EVANGELICAL METHODIST CHURCH, 1920 Lucas St. in Salem, has scheduled Christian comedian Al Fike of Texas, for a program Saturday night at 7 at the church.

Refreshments follow. Fike has performed nationally with Bob Hope, the Gaither Family and Ricky Scaggs. An offering will be taken.

\ THE REV. DR. B. CONRAD JOHNSTON, a former pastor of Salem Baptist Church, is interim minister of Clifton Forge Baptist Church.

\ THE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM, an ecumenical project of several Roanoke Valley churches to offer specific services to children and youth, has scheduled monthly training seminars for volunteers through June 7.

Debbie Mooty, coordinator of the project, said the meetings are especially to recruit workers but are open to others seeking training with church-sponsored ministries.

On April 14, "Professional Attitudes and the Volunteer" will be the theme from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Mountain at Third Southwest. The May 3 meeting, "Working with the Angry Child," will begin at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in downtown Salem. Registration for this session is needed; call 342-3501.

On June 7 at Trinity Church at 7:30, "An Overview of Child Development" is planned at 7:30 p.m.

\ VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION will send four teams this spring and summer to Hayesville, N.C., to build a home for a large family. The program sponsored by United Methodists, is open to others with an interest in exercising ministry through construction skills.

Teams will work in the rural Carolina community May 2-8, May 9-15, June 27 to July 3 and July 25-31.

Participants will pay $125 but some churches are raising part of the funds. Call 989-3335 for more information.

\ AWAKENING, an annual series of Lenten renewal services sponsored by Roanoke area Churches of the Brethren, will feature the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gibble of Arlington as the preacher this year.

The series will be March 28-31 at Central Church, 416 Church Ave. in downtown Roanoke.

"Brethren as People of the Book" will be the theme of the 7:15 p.m. services. Combined choirs will sing each night, and youth also will participate. Child care will be available.

Gibble was minister of education at Central Church before entering seminary about 30 years ago. He and his wife, Ann, have been co-pastors of the Arlington church since 1985.

\ PRESBYTERIANS FOR HABITAT, a joint project of several Roanoke area congregations to provide new houses for the working poor, will start work on a second house on April 14. The dwelling at 113 Harrison Ave. N.W. is expected to be finished in June.

\ A MUSIC WORKSHOP, directed by Marjorie Olive of East St. Louis, Ill., will be held Monday through Friday at Maple Street Baptist Church, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W.

Registration for the Music in Christian Education series will be Sunday and Monday. The cost is $5. Classes will be held weeknights from 6 to 9 and are for choir members and directors. Call 343-3880 for more information.

\ GRACE CHURCH, an evangelical Protestant congregation at 2731 Edgewood St. S.W., has scheduled its spring Bible conference March 19-21.

The Rev. Dr. Bruce W. Dunn of Peoria, Ill, is the keynote speaker. The radio and conference speaker is pastor emeritus of Grace Presbyterian Church, where he served for 40 years.

His weekly radio program, Grace Worship Hour, was begun 42 years ago and is still heard in the Roanoke area on WHPE-FM and on WRIS-AM.

Friday and Saturday night services at Grace Church will begin at 7 with those on Sunday at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nursery is available.
