HOKIES DROP GAMECOCKS IN BASEBALL
Virginia Tech overcame a four-run deficit and six errors to defeat South Carolina 6-5 in college baseball Thursday at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia, S.C.
Trailing 4-0, Tech's J.R. Hawkins and Bo Durkac led off the fourth inning with back-to-back solo home runs. Denny Hedspeth added a sacrifice fly and later singled in the tying run in the sixth inning. An error and Popeye Smith's groundout brought in two more runs for Tech (6-1).
In other baseball:
At Radford, two right-handed pitchers led Radford to two 6-2 victories over Navy. In the first game, sophomore Jim Abbott (2-0) pitched a complete-game, seven-inning three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking three. Duane Filchner had two hits, including a two-run homer in a three-run first inning, for the Highlanders (7-2); he scored twice and had three RBI. In the second game, freshman Chad Langhrer (1-0) won a seven-hitter, shutting out the Midshipmen through six innings.
In Lexington, Ned Atkins' grand slam in the fifth inning powered Bridgewater over VMI 5-3. VMI starter Ryan Glynn (1-3) took the loss. The Keydets are 7-6; Bridgewater is 7-2.
