AMERICANS SHUT OUT IN WORLDS
Canadian Kurt Browning won his fourth men's world championship, but no American took a medal, costing the United States one spot in next year's Winter Olympics.Browning regained the crown at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, and Canadian Elvis Stojko came from well behind to take second. When Alexei Urmanov of Russia got the bronze, sinking American Mark Mitchell to fourth, it meant the United States would have just two men's berths at Lillehammer, Norway, next February.
U.S. champion Scott Davis, in his first world championships, was sixth.
The failure of Mitchell and Davis to medal probably will cost one an Olympic spot. One of the berths is likely to go to 1988 Olympic champion Brian Boitano, expected to apply for reinstatement of eligibility this month under new International Skating Union rules.
