MORE SNOW? TODAY? BANK ON IT
Ahhh, eight days till spring: robins singing, leaves budding, the sun shining . . .But wait! Don't store that sled yet. On the horizon . . . could it be? Snow? Again?
Bank on it, the National Weather Service says.
"This one looks pretty good - almost a sure thing," said the weather service's Kane Galleo. He put the chance of a second significant snowfall here at 100 percent.
Thursday night, the service had already issued winter storm warnings for the New River Valley today and Saturday, predicting snow to begin falling late this morning. A winter storm watch is in effect for the Roanoke Valley.
The snow is expected to continue tonight and Saturday, when it should be joined by gusty winds blowing 25-35 miles per hour.
Galleo wouldn't make a prediction on how much snow the Roanoke Valley should get, but said the New River Valley could expect 8-12 inches from the storm, which Thursday was still hovering over Texas and the Gulf of Mexico.
"If [the storm] develops the way we anticipate, it should be more" snow than Roanoke received two weeks ago, Galleo said. And with temperatures over the weekend not expected to rise above freezing, "it'll hang around here for a while."
So, three years without any snow to note, then two falls in two weeks? Go figure.
"It just happens to fall into place," Galleo said.
