TOURISM GROUP WANTS SIGN BAN LIFTED

New River Valley HOSTS wants the National Park Service to change its ban on information signs along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The HOSTS board of directors voted earlier this month to seek the change so signs could be placed giving travelers local information about nearby communities.

It has sent a letter to parkway Superintendent Gary Everhart asking that officials seek better ways to inform parkway motorists about area attractions and nearby points of interest and communities while preserving the existing beauty of the scenic highway.

People on the parkway now can seldom know about cities, towns or points of interest just a short distance from the road, said HOSTS board member Bob Thomas, its past president.
