HE'S GLAD HE'S DONE WITH BATTLE LOGISTICS

As a person with a number of years in the field of purchasing and inventory control, logistics, I can well understand the job that Tom Mentzer is faced with. (Your article, "Tech expert ensures military is well supplied" by Madelyn Rosenberg)

As a combat infantryman in World War II, I wish we could have had more studies of these matters. We did get a little package of toilet paper in the K Ration box; that is, when we got rations. Many of us went through the winter of 1944-45 without proper winter wear, rations, fuel or ammunition. We were not much concerned about fit of our clothing, just warmth.

Now I know there have been many changes in the Armed Forces since World War II. I expect, though it is not mentioned, that Professor Mentzer got his grant to study the logistics involving women in the armed services under field conditions. Surely, to be effective, they would need the property sanitary supplies other than toilet paper.

I am happy that I have my military service far behind me!\ Robert M. Wiatt\ Blacksburg
