ODU WOMEN BEAT W&M FOR COLONIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Tournament most valuable player Pam Huntley scored 21 points Saturday as Old Dominion beat William and Mary 65-51 to win its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball tournament.

Regular-season champion Old Dominion (21-7) stretched its advantage to 62-44 with 5:07 remaining. William and Mary (11-17) closed to 13 points but could get no closer.

Old Dominion gets the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Monarchs led 35-28 at the half. Seventh-seeded William and Mary made it 48-42 on a free throw by Tamara Kaufmann with 13:09 left before Old Dominion pulled away.

Old Dominion cut the Tribe's floor shooting from 46 percent in the first half to 25 percent in the second, and the Monarchs shot 43 percent overall.

Celeste Hill had 12 points and 13 rebounds for Old Dominion, and Stephanie Gilmore contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

Marilyn Gayton led the Tribe with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Kaufmann scored 11 points.

Hill and Deanna Plas of Old Dominion, Aquendine Khasidis and Ashleigh Akens of William and Mary, and Gaynor O'Donnell of East Carolina were selected to the all-tournament team.
