SNOW POSTPONES GARBAGE PICKUP

There will be no garbage or recycling collection today in Roanoke and Roanoke County because of driving conditions.

Collection schedules will be adjusted so that all garbage is collected, but not on the regular day for many residents.

The schedules will be moved back a day so that Monday's routes will be collected on Tuesday. A similar schedule will be followed the rest of the week.

Because of the deep snow and icy conditions, all city residents must bring their garbage to the street curb this week, said Jim McClung, the city's acting public works director. City crews won't provide alley or backyard collections this week.

City offices will open at 8 a.m. today on the regular schedule. City Manager Bob Herbert said city employees are urged to use their own judgment in traveling or coming in later in the morning once road conditions improve.

Roanoke County offices will open two hours late at 10 a.m., said Ann Marie Green, public information officer.

In Roanoke, McClung said residents should be aware that snow-removal equipment clearing residential streets likely had will pile snow across driveways.

"We apologize in advance, but we can't clear the streets without having this occur," McClung said.
