BLIZZARD HOLDS UP START OF APPALACHIAN TRAIL HIKE

Instead of finding herself on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia at the start of a 2,146-mile hike to Maine, Melissa DeVaughn was snowbound in the Pilot section of Floyd County.

DeVaughn had planned to be on the trail at Springer Mountain, Ga., on Sunday.

Monday, she said it may be Wednesday or Thursday before she digs out of Floyd County.

"I think I'm going stir-crazy," DeVaughn laughed.

"I guess having the choice of being stuck on the trail in 18 inches of snow, or here, I might as well be here," she said.

In Floyd County, DeVaughn said none of the secondary roads had been touched.

When she finally gets on her way, DeVaughn will report monthly in the Roanoke Times & World-News on her experiences and impressions during the six-month hike.
