DERAILMENT INJURES 2 IN WEST VIRGINIA

A 78-car Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in Mercer County on Monday, injuring two crew members, spilling diesel fuel and forcing a highway to be closed, officials said.

Five locomotives and 13 rail cars loaded with automobiles left the tracks at 1:30 a.m. about a mile east of the Bluefield rail yard, said Norfolk Southern spokesman Bob Auman.

The diesel spill forced authorities to close U.S. 19 south into Bluefield for several hours. The spill later was contained, said Deputy Sheriff L.R. Catron.

A second derailment involving Norfolk Southern rail cars carrying coal was found Monday afternoon in McDowell County. No one was injured in that derailment.
