NO STANDING FOR SEN. ROBB

ONCE A MARINE, always a Marine. From Tun Tavern to Kuwait, Marines have served with distinction, including Sen. Robb. In his Senate speech Feb. 4, he mentioned five soldierly virtues - some innate and some learned. But he has failed to match the high standards of loyalty and moral courage imbued in Marine officers at Quantico.

Former members of his Senate staff could explain better than I his failures of these virtues as he abandoned them in the aftermath of the telephone taping episode of Gov. Wilder's conversation.

Always a Marine, I see Robb as a failed leader. He is a political opportunist who puts self-interest and service to president and party ahead of any loyalty to God, country and Corps.

If Robb is obligated to support that expert on the military culture, President Clinton, on the issue of gays in the military, I hope he presents his case without invoking his Marine Corps service which he quickly departed for political gain.

There is a Marine courtesy of standing when a senior officer enters a room. I will always stand for the Marine Corps hymn, but will remain seated for Robb. ROBERT O. WILLS DALEVILLE
