PREP PLAYOFFS PUSHED BACK BY WEATHER
The great blizzard continues to have the Group A basketball quarterfinals tied in knots long after the snow has started to melt. The game between Covington and Twin Springs that was scheduled for Tuesday night at Marion High School has been postponed until today and made part of a doubleheader with the Floyd County-Hurley game, tournament director Larry Sayers said.
"Covington said it couldn't make it," Sayers said.
Today's doubleheader will be a single session with Covington and Twin Springs playing at 4 p.m. and Floyd County and Hurley following at 6. Unlike previously scheduled sessions, admission for both games tonight can be gained with a single ticket, Sayers said.
The heavy snow has hampered the ability of all the teams to get to Marion, particularly Covington and Floyd County. Should today's session be postponed, further hassles will develop.
"I'm going to run into real problems having it here," said Sayers, the athletic director at Marion. "A lot of my workers have made plans to go to the state tournament Thursday in Charlottesville. I don't know what we're going to do."
If the tournament cannot be held at Marion, then a Southwestern Virginia site that is as convenient as possible to all teams must be found, said Virginia High School League programs supervisor Claudia Dodson.
Further postponements would interfere with the Group A semifinals, which are scheduled for Thursday night at University Hall in Charlottesville, Dodson said.
"We'd have to cancel the Thursday night session at U-Hall and move those games to Friday night at one of the local high school gyms," she said. "We're working on plans for that now, in case we have to do that."
Under that plan, Saturday's 1 p.m. championship game could go off as planned at U-Hall.
