MANHATTAN COACH HAS UVA TIES

When Manhattan assistant coach Anthony Solomon learned the Jaspers would be playing Virginia in the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, all he could do was look at his wife, Tracy.

The couple met at Virginia when they were freshmen in 1983, and they graduated together in 1987.

"I figured we would be in the East Region and maybe go to Winston-Salem," Solomon said. "But our name didn't appear in that bracket, and that's when I knew we'd be going to Syracuse. When they flashed Virginia and Manhattan, Tracy and I just looked at each other and hugged."

Solomon, in his first year at Manhattan, was a reserve guard for the Cavaliers during his four-year career from 1983-1987. Solomon, 28, will be coaching against his alma mater for the first time. After realizing that, the next thought that came to his mind was Cavaliers coach Jeff Jones, who coached Solomon. Although Solomon didn't see much action - he averaged 4.8 minutes in his career and scored a total of 58 points - he and Jones became good friends. The source of the camaraderie was Tracy.

"Tracy and I started to date early in college," Solomon said, "and whenever Coach Jones saw us together he would tease us about marriage because he got married as a senior. By the time I was senior, he was telling us we would get married before we graduated."

Jones was wrong; the two didn't get married until a year after they graduated.

Jones said the Cavaliers know little about Manhattan (23-6) but are aware the Jaspers, who have won 17 of their past 19 games, are on a roll. His feeling about the matchup was similar to Solomon's.

"The first thing that entered my mind was that we would be going up against Anthony's team," Jones said. "He has done a great job up there in his first year, and it's an exciting time for them."
