CLASSROOMS TO BE TESTED FOR ASBESTOS

Three classrooms at Christiansburg Middle School have been closed because of cracking floor tiles.

The rooms, in the school's lower building, were closed as a precautionary measure until the old tiles and the glue holding them to the floor are tested for the presence of asbestos.

The school system is doing the testing in the "interest of safety," Superintendent Harold Dodge said. The potential contamination is of the least dangerous sort, he said.

The floors were tested in 1991 and it was found that the tiles were not producing airborne asbestos fibers.

Teachers and students will return to the classrooms when the floors have been repaired and the potential threat of asbestos contamination reduced, Principal William Fletcher said in a letter to parents.
