RESCUERS FREE COW STALLED IN SNOW
When some Virginia Tech veterinary students came upon a cow caught in a snowdrift Monday night, they figured they needed help.
So someone called the, uh, experts in extracting snowbound bovines: the Blacksburg Rescue Squad.
Crawling through drifts and over a barbed-wire fence, Allison Keister and two other women from the squad came to the cow, stuck up to its shoulders.
A police officer and the students stood around the black Angus, waiting for help. "They didn't have the manpower," Keister said.
The solution was obvious: Dig out the drift-bound bovine.
"We took shovels and dug around her, and kept pulling her up and up," until they finally freed the cow, Keister said.
The cow, seemingly suffering from a touch of hypothermia, was led to grass, given warm water and alfalfa hay, and covered with a blanket.
"It was a team effort," Keister said after the two-hour rescue. "The worst part was digging and trying to convince the cow that, `Look, you need to help us out.' "
