Bedford Leggett to become an outlet

Leggett said Tuesday it will convert its Bedford department store to a Leggett Outlet Center in mid-August. The store will feature merchandise that has been reduced at other stores, plus special-purchase merchandise, said R. Nick Markham, the company's spokesman in Lynchburg.

The store will be designed with checkout counters instead of retail service desks.

The current operation will close in mid-July to be revamped. Leggett operates two other outlet stores, in Hampton and Fredericksburg. Two more are scheduled to open this year, but Markham would not give their locations.

The Bedford store, in Westgate Shopping Center, is one of few Leggett's remaining in small towns. Stores in downtown Rocky Mount and in Lewisburg, W.Va., are scheduled to close by mid-April.

Including outlets, Leggett operates 45 stores in five states. - Staff report
