MARTINSVILLE PUTS OFF RACES
Last weekend's heavy snowfall and this week's meltdown have forced Martinsville Speedway to postpone Sunday's Miller Genuine Draft 500 doubleheader. The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 8, with one change - the 200-lap Late Model Stock Car race will be replaced by a 200-lap Winston All Pro Series feature.
Snow from last weekend's blizzard remains on the speedway's parking lots, making the grass fields much too soft for parking spectators' vehicles.
"It was a difficult decision," speedway chairman of the board H. Clay Earles said Wednesday. "But we knew there was just no way to park the fans."
Earles said the Late Model Stock Car feature was dropped because many of the competitors already will have started their run for the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship at area weekly tracks by early May.
"As much as we wanted this event for ourselves and the Stocks, it would not be fair to take the cars away from so many weekly tracks," Earles said.
The program's 300-lap Busch Grand National race remains intact, Earles said.
