EPA: 1 IN 5 SCHOOLS HAVE HIGH RADON LEVEL
More than 70,000 classrooms in the United States and nearly one of five schools have unacceptably high levels of radioactive radon gas, the Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday. The EPA said more than 10,000 classrooms have radon levels more than double the EPA standard.
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Commerce Committee's panel on health and the environment, said that in some areas "it may be more dangerous to attend school than it would be to work in a nuclear power plant."
