NEW RIVER CASTINGS UNION DECERTIFICATION DRIVE STALLED

A petition to eliminate the union at New River Castings was withdrawn earlier this month.

A request to decertify United Steelworkers Local 9336 was filed Feb. 23 with the National Labor Relations Board in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Ron Yost, supervisor examiner for NLRB, said the petition was accepted because it appeared that 30 percent of the union members supported the idea.

The petition, filed by Roddy Martin, a worker at the plant and member of the union negotiating team, was withdrawn March 1.

Martin would not talk about why the request was withdrawn, but said he will look at the situation again in about a month.

Since 1947 the NLRB has accepted 525 petitions from unions wanting to decertify.
