CLINTON'S `CONTRIBUTIONS'

REGARDING Cal Thomas' Feb. 24 commentary, "Message to Clinton: `No way, we won't pay' ":

He hit the nail right on the head. How can anyone fall for the president's fraudulent scheme to put more money into Congress' hands only to be spent with the "thriftiness" of a shop-a-holic? Americans are not under the acute penny-pinching, scrutinizing government that should be ruling our country, but rather under a series of programs that sucks our money right out of the economy. These programs, well-meaning as they may be, are not practical with the high deficit America we live with today.

As for "sacrifice," "investment" and "contribution," these are certainly good terms to be applied to our country's current financial rehabilitation. However, we need to apply very different meanings. Congress needs to sacrifice; businesses need to invest to create jobs, therefore creating more "contributions" and lowering unemployment at the same time.

No new taxes on the middle class? We are reading your lips now, Mr. President.

By the way, aren't contributions normally tax-deductible? TRACE McGEATH ROANOKE
