OBIT LAYMAN, KATE HAZLEN
LAYMAN, Kate Hazlen, 93, a life long resident of New Castle, died Thursday, March 18, 1993. She is survived by her sister, Eva Layman Bowes, Denver, Colo.; a nephew, Dr. Watson A. Bowes, Jr., Chapel Hill, N.C.; three nieces, Ella Kate Dahlgren, Cincinnati, Ohio, Barbara Chambliss, Carbondale, Colo., Margaret Layman Bowes, Durango, Colo.; a host of beloved grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and devoted friends. She was a daughter of the late Senator George W. Layman and Addie Reynolds Layman. Following graduation from Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg in 1921, she taught school in Gadsden, Ala., and in New Castle. Throughout her life, she was deeply committed to her church and many civic organizations. She was a founding member of the Craig County Historical Society and a charter member of the New Castle Garden Club. Her life long devotion to the Methodist church included long service as organist and church school teacher at New Castle United Methodist Church. She also had affectionate ties to Old Bethel United Methodist Church. Services will be held at New Castle United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, with the Rev. David Breeden officiating. Burial will be at the Ross Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Boitnott Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Castle United Methodist Church, the New Castle Garden Club, the Craig County Historical Society, the New Castle Fire Department or Craig County Rescue Squad.
