SPOTSWOOD TAKES AA STATE TITLE

Senior guard Carey Keyes scored 21 points, including the winning basket with eight seconds left, Saturday as Spotswood beat Greensville County 50-48 for the state Group AA boys' basketball championship.

Keyes was 9-of-9 from the free-throw line, and Jason Jones added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Trailblazers (27-1).

Ricky Barnes led Greensville (20-9) with 19 points, including 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Marcus Clark had 13 points and six blocked shots for the Eagles.

Spotswood took its first lead when Keyes sank both ends of a one-and-one to put the Trailblazers ahead 34-32 with 1:04 left in the third quarter.

Greensville regained the lead midway through the fourth quarter and led by three points before Jones scored inside to tie it at 48 with 46 seconds left.

Greensville's Terrance Fields was called for traveling, one of 12 Eagles turnovers in the second half, with 41 seconds left.

Following a timeout with 12 seconds left, Spotswood inbounded to Keyes, who drove the baseline and beat Clark to the basket for the final score. Group A boys

\ Twin Springs 60, Franklin 59: Chad Ervin sank a jump shot from 16 feet with three seconds remaining to give Twin Springs the triumph over previously unbeaten Franklin.

Senior Landon Bays led Twin Springs (21-6) with 27 points and finished the three-game tournament with 80 points, two short of the record. Franklin (28-1) fell short in its bid to become the first Group A team to go unbeaten since Fort Defiance in 1980. Group AAA boys

\ Bethel 77, John Marshall 71: Tony Rutland scored 30 points and Allen Iverson had 28 as the Bruins (28-3) beat the Justices (23-6) in the title game.

Rutland was 13-of-21 from the field, including four of eight 3-pointers. Iverson added nine rebounds, nine assists and five steals for the Bruins (28-3).

Edmund Sherod scored 34 points for John Marshall (23-6), making nine of 14 shots from the field and 16 of 19 free throws. Thomas Coleman added 21 points for the Justices. Group AAA girls

\ James Madison 70, Menchville 55: Windsor Coggeshall scored 27 points to lead James Madison to its second state title in the past three years.

James Madison (28-2), winner of its past 24 games, also got 18 points and seven assists from Nicole Mitchelle and 10 points from Kirsten Roberts.

Sophomore Danielle Dawson led Menchville (23-7) with 27 points, and Misty Hart added 16 points.
