WORKERS STRIKE AT ALLIED SIGNAL IN RICHMOND

About 1,700 hourly workers at two Richmond area Allied Signal Inc. plants began their first strike in 15 years, with points of contention including pay, a proposed medical plan and vacations.

Union workers at Allied's Chesterfield Fibers Division and Technical Center in Chesterfield County began the strike at midnight Sunday, said Saundra Mason, secretary for Teamsters Local 101.

The strike came after workers voted 1,126-148 Friday to reject the company's three-year contract offer, Whitley said.

Workers at the Technical Center are involved in research and development, and they help produce a yarn for bulletproof vests, he said. Workers at the Fibers Division make yarn for tires and carpet and a molder polymer used by other companies to make plastic products.

The company, based in Morristown, N.J., was not negotiating with the union Sunday night, said Cleon Deaner, an Allied Signal personnel manager. He said management and other salaried workers were taking over jobs of striking employees. - Associated Press
