ROANOKE ROMPS 21-11 IN LACROSSE
Junior attackman Brett Smith, who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury but was the team's leading scorer two years ago, scored seven goals and had two assists as Roanoke routed Pfeiffer 21-11 in men's lacrosse Sunday at Alumni Field in Salem.The Maroons (1-1), ranked third in Division III, blew the game open with an 8-2 fourth-quarter run. Mark DiBenedetto added three goals and five assists and Bart Zimmerman had three goals for Roanoke. Junior goalkeeper Matt Graham had 20 saves in his first start.
The Maroons play next at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against visiting Colorado College.
In other lacrosse:
Gettysburg, ranked sixth in Division III, pounded 13th-ranked Washington and Lee 14-7 in men's lacrosse in Lexington behind Steve Mayer's four goals. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Generals (3-1).
W&L trailed 7-2 at the half and 9-5 late in the third quarter before cutting it to 9-7. Gettysburg (2-0) scored five goals in the fourth for the final margin.
Wiemi Douoguih scored three goals to lead W&L.
At Richmond, Radford's Steve Govett scored seven goals, including the game-winner two minutes into the second overtime as the Highlanders defeated Marist 18-17 in a men's game late Saturday night. Ricky Platter added three goals for Radford (2-2) and Adam Hayes had two. Marist is 1-1.
