FERRUM IMPROVES TO 3-0 IN DIXIE
At Newport News, senior first baseman Jerald Smith hit a grand slam in the second inning and Ferrum beat Christopher Newport 10-7 in Dixie Conference college baseball.Smith finished 2-for-3, scored twice and had five RBI for the Panthers (8-2 overall, 3-0 Dixie). Christopher Newport is 4-5, 0-3. The Panthers have a doubleheader with Shenandoah at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ferrum.
Richmond defeated Radford 12-4 in the opener but the Highlanders came back with a 5-1 victory in the second game, shortened to six innings by darkness. Designated hitter Mike Hurt had a two-run homer for Radford (8-5) in the opener. Freshman right-hander Jay Hensley allowed four singles, six walks and struck out four to earn the win in the second game. The Spiders are 9-5.
Virginia Tech built a 5-0 lead and held off UNC Greensboro 7-5 on soggy a English Field. Mike Reedy had two doubles, a single and scored five runs for the Hokies (7-2), who play a doubleheader against visiting Howard today at 1 p.m. UNCG, which used seven pitchers, is 10-5.
At Patchin Field in Lexington, VMI snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-6 Southern Conference victory over Georgia Southern, which won the first game by the same score. Georgia Southern had a 14-game winning streak snapped with the loss in the doubleheader.
In Athens, Ga., Georgia (14-4) sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits to take a lead it never relinquished in a 14-13 victory over Virginia (8-10). The Cavaliers had 17 hits, including three each from Tom Crowley, who drove in three runs, and Brian Buchanan.
