TICKET WILL READ: TERRY, BEYER, DOLAN

The Democratic ticket in November will be former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry for governor, Lt. Gov. Donald Beyer for his current post, and Arlington attorney William Dolan for attorney general, the party chairman said.

Democrats met in caucuses Saturday and chose about 2,500 delegates. According to unofficial results tallied Sunday, enough were committed to Terry, Beyer and Dolan to assure them of the nominations - even though about 1,000 delegates remain to be chosen tonight, said Democratic Party chairman Paul Goldman.

"It's an overwhelming victory for everybody," Goldman said. "It's obvious the Terry-Beyer-Dolan ticket's going to be a good ticket."

Unofficial results were in late Sunday afternoon from caucuses representing more than 90 percent of delegates already selected, Goldman said.

Of those delegates chosen Saturday, 2,111 were pledged to Terry, about 29 were uncommitted and three had pledged for Nancy Spannaus, a follower of convicted felon and political extremist Lyndon LaRouche, Goldman said.

Beyer, who was running unopposed, had 2,121 delegates, with about 24 uncommitted, he said.

Dolan had a 1,919-178 lead over Bedford County prosecutor James Updike, with about 178 delegates uncommitted, Goldman said.

The Updike campaign said Sunday it has grounds to challenge more than 900 of Dolan's delegates, but it did not specify the reasons.

"I would discourage anyone from making any frivolous challenges that are not going to change the results," Goldman said.

Nominees will be officially picked by the 3,500 delegates to the state Democratic convention May 7-8 in Richmond.

Goldman, who steps down as state party chairman Saturday, said he was leaving it in good shape for his successor.

The caucuses are open to any registered voter who pledges to support the Democratic ticket, but they usually attract far fewer participants than a primary.

Terry resigned as attorney general last month to devote full time to her gubernatorial campaign.
