TOMMY BAKER TO RUN AGAIN

Del. Tommy Baker, R-Dublin, announced over the weekend that he will seek a third term in the Virginia House of Delegates.

When Baker was first elected to the General Assembly in 1989, he ran on a platform pushing for elected school boards, favoring capital punishment and opposing general tax increases.

Noting that an elected-school-boards law has been enacted by the legislature, Baker said his future priorities include pushing for repeal of Virginia's tax on Social Security and working to bring equality to the pay of teachers, police officers and other state employees.

Baker wants voters to recall that he was one of only a few legislators who voted against the 1990 pledge-bond package that was rejected overwhelmingly by voters and that he supported the 1992 bond package for education, parks and mental health that voters approved by significant margins.

During the past session of the legislature, Baker said he sponsored three bills aimed at curbing child abuse and assisting prosecutors in sexual assault cases. Baker's 7th District is composed of Pulaski County, the city of Radford and western Giles County.
