GA. SOUTHERN KNOCKS OFF VMI 10-6

In Lexington, Georgia Southern's Todd Greene hit two home runs for the second straight game as the Eagles beat VMI 10-6 in college baseball.

Greene, with 79 homers, is tied for third on the NCAA's all-time list. VMI led 6-4 after six innings, but Craig Cassedy's two-run single tied it and RBI by Mark Hamlin and Mark Dean put Georgia Southern (18-6) ahead in the seventh.

VMI is 8-10.

In Blacksburg, David Fitt's four RBI got Tech started on a doubleheader sweep of Howard University. Fitt's bat helped the Hokies win the first game 12-0, and Tech got seven good innings from freshman left-hander Brian Fitzgerald to win 10-2 in the second game. Fitzgerald (2-0) had 10 strikeouts, and Josh Herman had three RBI. In the first game, Ken Nonamaker had three RBI for Tech (9-2). Howard is 1-17.

In Martinsville, North Cross swept a high school season-opening doubleheader from Carlisle, 13-5 and 12-2. In the first game for the Raiders, Ryan Shaver had a double, triple and two RBI; in the second, Aaron Lange had a double, triple and three RBI. North Cross' Jason Davis finished the day with four hits and four RBI.

At New Castle, Shawsville first baseman Gordon Howard was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI as Shawsville beat Craig County 11-0 in a non-district high school game shortened to four innings because of darkness and field conditions. It was the first game for both teams. Jason Booth had three hits and three RBI for Shawsville.
