MONTANA APPEARING AT HANES 500 NFL QUARTERBACK JOE MONTANA WILL CALL THE
The grand marshal for Martinsville Speedway's April 25 race won't be any ordinary Joe.San Francisco 49ers quarterback and three-time Super Bowl most valuable player Joe Montana will serve as the grand marshal for the 38th annual Hanes 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at the speedway.
Montana, a Hanes spokesperson, has guided the 49ers to four Super Bowl titles. His scheduled appearance caused racer Dale Jarrett to schedule an equipment change.
The National Football League is an associate sponsor of Jarrett's Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, owned by former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs. Jarrett wears the colors of a different NFL team on his helmet each week, and he was scheduled to wear Cincinnati Bengals colors in the race, as he did last season when Hanes' rep and former Bengal Boomer Esiason was grand marshal.
Jarrett now is planning to buckle up a red-and-gold helmet in honor of Montana's 49ers.
"Joe Montana is an unbelievable quarterback and I can't wait to meet him," Jarrett said. "We didn't have a good day for Boomer last year, so the least we can do is have a good day for Montana."
The Hanes 500 will commence at 12:30 p.m., when Montana barks out his signal: "Gentlemen, start your engines."
