ALTERNATIVE FUELS ON TAX-EXEMPT LIST
The Clinton administration Tuesday offered to exempt ethanol and methanol from its proposed new energy tax. Both fuels are used to create cleaner-burning gasoline. The administration said it had removed the two energy sources from the tax list to promote more environmentally friendly fuels.
Ethanol is an alcohol based on farm products such as corn. Methanol, also an alcohol, is used by Indy race car drivers because it is less volatile than gasoline.
