U.S. ATTORNEY WAITING

E. Montgomery Tucker, the U.S. Attorney for Western Virginia, has been expecting the boot since November.

On Tuesday, he was doing a political soft-shoe.

A spokeswomen in his office relayed messages that Tucker had received no formal request from Attorney General Janet Reno to resign.

"He'll not be making any statements until he receives official notice," the spokeswoman said.

Already, the Democratic candidates for Tucker's job are howling at his door.

Among those who have expressed interest are: Robert P. Crouch Jr., a former Henry County Circuit Court clerk; John Buck, Radford's commonwealth's attorney; Tim McAfee, the Wise County commonwealth's attorney; and John Edwards, a former U.S. attorney.

"I have little doubt I will be replaced. It's just been an honor to serve my president," Tucker said shortly after Clinton's election.
